Not sure why, but i'm addicted
Just over a year ago, a coworker of mine convinced me to train for one of these Small "Tri-For-Fun" series triathlons just for the hell of it. I needed to lose some weight so I figured, what the hell... lets see what happens.

Three months later, I ran in my first sprint distance triathlon ( 600 Yard swim, 13 mile bike, 3.1 mile run) and finished somewhere in the 1hr 15 mins range. Not great, but that's all it took to get me hooked.

A lot of you are probably reading this and saying to yourself, big deal, those distances aren't so bad.... You're absolutely right, so the question is, why the heck are you sitting on your asses and not doing it yourself.

Anyhow, the experience of running in my first race was really positive. The atmosphere and camaraderie was great. The most appealing thing to me is that ultimately; the "real part of the sport" is the training leading up to the event. The event itself represents such an infinitely small portion of the training, that it almost seems inconsequential.

My next goal was to run a sprint distance under 1 hrs. So I trained harder and a few tris (pun intended) later, i came in under 1hr (58 mins to be exact). Somewhere in there, I also starting running in Olympic/International distance triathlon (1000 yard swim, 22 Mile bike (40K), 6 mile run (10K) ), and found I could complete those without too much trouble. Generally, I enjoy trying to push the limits of endurance, rather than speed... After all I'm old..

At this point, it was one year (or 60 pounds) later and was in the best shape of my life. I was regularly running in Sprint and Olympic tris and was still digging it. So I quietly decided to start training for the next level up.... a 1/2 Ironman. A 1/2 Ironman (aka: Tinman) is comprised of a 1.25 mile swim followed by a 56 mile bike ride and topped off by a 1/2 marathon.

I quickly found out that my previous training model of "Run a lot, Bike a lot and Swim a lot" wasn't working for a long distance event.

Great Triathlon Links
you can register for pretty much any race in the country here
They are kind of the governing body of the sport in the US.
They run some great events in the Bay Area. (The big Kahuna )
They hold a bunch of well managed events in the Area.
Crucible Fitness I liked the training articles on this site a lot. take a look.

Some of my training runs around San Ramon
When I'm feeling balsy, I'll go big and do this route. The last 2 miles are all uphill...
My every Sunday maintenance Run.
When I'm tired or in a hurry to go windsurf, I'll cut my runs short and do 10 Mile run or slightly shorter 9 mile version

The biggest difference is that you can pretty much find 2 hours in a weekend to run a "Mock" Olympic triathlon, but its a lot harder to find 5 hrs to do a "Mock" Tinman. Not to mention, that you kinda need water/food/aid stations after running more than 3 hours and it's impossible to carry all that shit on you for a training run. So my solution was to dramatically alter my training technique. I now "Run a lot, Bike a lot and Swim a lot" and would run two thirds of a race on sundays, altering the missing 3rd every week.... Anyhow, I did that for the entire summer without too much problem, and got ready to run in an event called the 1/2 Vineman in Napa.

Let me tell you; this class of event is a completely different animal. First and foremost, the competitors weren't just Fat people on a health kick... these were hardcore athletes. Secondly, the venue is a huge production. EMT's & Cops at most big intersections for over 70 miles of terrain, aid stations every 15 miles on the bike ride and every mile on the run. By aid stations, we are talking about Food, Water, Gatorade, Goo, Cliff shots, Tylenol, toilets ... I don't even have that at home....

To be Continued

Next stop IronMan ? no promises, but I'll give it a shot !
UPDATE : August 15th, 2004. The deed is done ! I ran my first Ironman.

A few weeks ago (Late Sep, 2003) I decided I'd start training for my first full length ironman. I'm still not sure I can pull it off, but I'll give it a try. For now, my goal is to peak for the VineMan race on august 14th, 2004. I thought it might be fun to keep a log of my training until then.

Total Mileage since
Oct-20th

Where in the world is Jacques Vigeant ?

I was out with friends a while back and someone made a joke about me cycling around the globe. When I got back home that night, for the hell of it, I did the math and to my shock I found that I've put in enough mileage to circle the globe at the equator since I started triathlons.

So I thought it would be amusing to track this since I started training for the IronMan.
